Duke University On Point with Graduation Gifts!

Posted by Jamie M., Book Specialist on Jul 26th 2017

The Duke Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program is touted as a tech-savvy alternative to the MBA by preparing engineering and science graduates for leadership positions.

In fact, 92 percent of grads actively pursuing employment found jobs within six months of graduation. It’s this dedication to post-education success that has led the school to incorporate the gift of literature into the graduation process. Lorelle, the Associate Director of the MEM program, explains how the introduction of bulk books has made a lasting impression on graduates of the program.

Inspiring Individuals

Graduation for most students is a culmination of years of blood, sweat and tears.

There's truly no better way to mark this significant achievement of higher education than with the gift of a book.

According to Lorelle, Duke not only distributes small gift bags that include a specially selected book to graduates of their MEM program – they invite everyone involved in the ceremony to look at the featured literature more closely.

“We ask our graduation speakers to reference the chosen book, and explain why the title was selected and how it might be helpful as the students begin their professional journeys,” Lorelle says. So, not only do students receive books – they also obtain guidance that they can take with them.

Staying Relevant Through Bulk Books

Although the world, and technology, is constantly changing, principles such as leadership, innovation and creativity remain critical in facing the professional world head on.

To enlighten, inform and focus graduates about what they are about to encounter, Lorelle explains, “We choose books that we believe will engage our student population, offer practical advice and solutions, and be reflective of the current professional landscape.”

Duke University wants their Masters graduates to succeed, and recognize the empowering effect that bulk books like these can have on post-graduate students embarking on their own professional journeys:

David and Goliath

The Other Side of Innovation

 and

Disciplined Dreaming

We agree with their method, one-hundred percent!
