Keeping it 100 for the 100th Day of School

Posted by Michelle Dempsey, Book Specialist on Jan 25th 2016

Believe it or not, the 100th day of school is already upon us! For months, you've likely been using your hundreds charts, coins, and calendar math to help your students count up to the magical three-digit number they love so much- so now it's time to celebrate it!

By now, you have probably figured out that sneaking math into the daily classroom routine is the equivalent of moms baking zucchini and squash into their kids’ cookies- stealthy, yet effective. There is no shortage of ways to implement math strategies into the school day, and any teacher worth her weight in dry-erase markers knows that the 100th day count is one of the most exciting ways to celebrate math in a fun and engaging way, every single day!

Because our Book Specialists fully support anything fun and engaging, we are in FULL support of using books such as this one to help weave numbers into just about anything you introduce in the classroom.

Ready, Freddy! #13: The One Hundredth Day of School! by Abby Klein, John Mckinley, 9780439895934

Ready, Freddy! #13: The One Hundredth Day of School! In this early elementary chapter book, students follow Freddy on his adventure to celebrate his own 100th day of school party – except there are a few, actually 100, things he needs to bring along to the celebration. By helping students brainstorm items to collect, letting them count them out in groups, and developing their own “Ready, Freddy” dialogue – you have just successfully snuck some very valuable math time into your schools’ language arts block!

If you are late to the 100th day fascination, not to worry – there’s still time! With a hundreds chart and a calendar, you can implement this engaging counting strategy in the classroom by encouraging students to rewind the clock, think back to the first day of school, and count up from there!

After the dust settles on the big celebration, there is no need to stop counting. There are plenty of ways to keep the math momentum going while sneaking the love of numbers into all aspects of a school day:

Countdown to the last day of school!

Writing 100 words

How many days until … ?

Trust us, you’ll want this to be the next book you share with your group of marvelous mathematicians!

Happy counting!
