National Get Caught Reading Month

Posted by Michelle Dempsey, Book Specialist on May 9th 2016

Whether it’s speeding on the freeway or sticking your hand in that cookie jar – sometimes it feels good to do wrong. In life, however, these are the things you do not want to get caught doing. In school, though? Feel free to get caught reading – it’s that time of year again!

That’s right – it’s already May, which means it’s National Get Caught Reading month, and educators and readers all over the country are gearing up to get caught doing something so good. For 17 years the Association of American Publishers has worked hard to make this initiative come to fruition which has helped countless of celebrities, librarians, teachers, and librarians across the country embrace this book-loving campaign.

Our Bulk Bookstore specialists are all for a little naughty “get caught reading” action – especially when it helps to foster a deeper love of the language arts in young minds and learners. Our book selection is plentiful and our ideas for celebrating this wonderful week runneth over, so we just had to share our ideas for all you literacy lovers to grab a hold of.

Check out our top three ways to promote Get Caught Reading month – and don’t forget to check in with us for the very best in classroom reading.

3. Get Mysterious

Theme-up! Turn your classroom into a real life place of mystery, and turn your learners into sleuths ready to solve some reading crimes! Assign a detective, a book thief, and some witnesses as you have students dissect plot themes, make engaged predictions, and solve reading mysteries with genre-appropriate reading options. Our favorite pick for this type of awesome reading adventure? The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier. Trust us, your readers will be hooked!

2. Schedule a library scavenger hunt!

Allow students to get lost in literary la-la land with some scavenger hunt fun! Give clues, pair up students, and send them on their way to be able to get their hands in on some new and exciting reading opportunities. We highly suggest assigning a theme here too – a la Hunger Games. Students will jump at the chance to become contenders on this hunt. Not sure how to celebrate the winning pair? Allow them to “Get Caught Reading” with a book prize of their choice – one they will love sharing with their fellow classmates!

1. Let your students take over!

No two students have the same reading preferences and reading habits. Allow your students to connect with each other and bring their love of books to life by assigning each student a period in the day to take the floor! For the younger set, simply having them read a selection to the group will generate lots of laughs. For the more advanced crowd, have students plan an activity that will engage their peers in the type of reading they love most.

Now – go get caught reading – you have a whole month do so, and Bulk Bookstore book specialists encourage it!

Be Well, Read well.
