Trouble in Tampa: School Fire Inspires Book Donations

Posted by Jamie M., Book Specialist on Dec 7th 2017

After a fire damaged the majority of a local elementary school’s library and resources, the Jersey College's Tampa campus approached Bulk Bookstore with a plan – to donate children’s books to the school ASAP.

As the fire took place directly before the chaos of Hurricane Irma, the effort to provide books to this school were challenging – but that didn’t stop Jersey College from getting the job done.

On Tuesday, September 12th, an electrical fire unfortunately affected one of Tampa’s oldest schools, Robert E. Lee Elementary.

Though thankfully none were injured in the fire, the majority of the campus was destroyed – along with the library, and all reading materials for the children who attended the elementary school.

As if the havoc of Hurricane Irma was not enough, the destruction provided a dose of determination to the Jersey College Tampa team, who set out on contacting publishers, book providers, and other literary resources right away despite the community’s impending climate.

A Helping Hand

“The only thing I was wondering was, how can we assist our community at this time? How do we help children in need?”

As a nursing school, the faculty and students of the Jersey College's Tampa campus have a passion for helping others in need, and for being there for their community to help see them through the toughest of times.

We’re proud to say that the school ultimately reached their goal, and was able to provide multiple boxes of various children’s titles to Lee Elementary to help them rebuild their library in the aftermath of the accident! Once rebuilt, the school will be freshly stocked with brand new books ready to be plucked up by eager student readers.

Bulk Bookstore is honored to have partnered with Jersey College's Tampa campus in this endeavor – especially in the time of such tragedy, when student learning is at stake. We need more institutions like this one, which choose to reach out in kindness without even being asked, and without asking anything in return.

The Bulk Bookstore team sends well wishes to Lee Elementary and all affected.
