Work Green: Live Clean

Posted by Michelle Dempsey, Book Specialist on Mar 30th 2016

By this point, we are all pretty much signed up for healthy eating in hopes of a longer lifestyle. We try to recycle and do our part for the betterment of our planet. We use eco-friendly cleaning products to minimize toxins in the home.

So, can a green, eco-friendly work environment also make a difference?

Absolutely. With Earth Day approaching, we couldn’t help but shed light on the fact that more and more workplaces are doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint. It’s no secret that once you make the switch to organic food from fast food, you feel better, both mentally and physically. Once you clean your home with non-toxic products, you automatically give yourself a pat on the back for making a positive change.

But if you think about your job, the place where you spend such a huge amount of your time and energy, isn’t it’s imperative to begin applying these same healthy, eco-friendly, organic, green-living strategies?

In this Newsweek article about the Top Green Companies in America, I was surprised to see that not a single one has anything to do with organic food, crops or recycling. The top ten is actually rounded out by companies in the financial, information technology, health care, and consumer staples industries, and in a surprising plot twist, The Hershey Company made the cut.

Number one on this list was Biogen, one of the oldest and largest biotechnology companies in the world that focuses on developing treatments for certain neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases and even cancer. Biogen has earned their place at the top of the list by recognizing the heavy demands on water made by the biotech sector, and then working to reduce water usage across its operations.

And what is Hershey doing to reduce their effect on the environment? Since 2010, the company has made significant efforts to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions. The company has achieved zero waste-to-landfill status for 11 facilities, including six manufacturing plants that represent 97 percent of the company's U.S. production.

It’s not hard to be inspired by the changes even the biggest of businesses have been making. A. Bronwyn Llewellyn, the author of Green Jobs: A Guide to Eco-Friendly Employment, felt the call toward this eco-friendly workplace push. This book not only perfectly translates the need for a reduced impact on the environment, this one-of-a-kind handbook shows readers how to do the following: identify the greenest jobs in every industry; break into the fastest growing eco-friendly fields; go for extra training if needed; and start their own eco-friendly businesses in a comprehensive and strategic way.
