Holocaust Books for Schools

“Although words do pale, yet we must speak. We must strive to understand. We must teach the lessons of the Holocaust.

And most of all, we ourselves must remember.” – Jimmy Carter

In all of our lives, we enter times of sadness. Badness. Unhappiness and upheaval. In these times, we learn how to better handle ourselves, to better prepare ourselves against letting these things happen again. We do this, to avoid history repeating itself.

So this begs the question – how do we prepare against the tragic events we’ve never even lived through? How do we ensure that our children, our children’s children, and every generation to learn the lessons – remember – and ensure the events of the Holocaust or the hatred behind it could never be duplicated?

Through the power of history. Through the insight of understanding.

Through the wisdom of books.

This May 4th marks the 37th year that we honor Yom Hashoah. Otherwise known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, this period of time was chosen in honor of the day that American Troops liberated the Dachau concentration camp. No matter your background or religious beliefs there is no denying that the history of the Holocaust must be ingrained in the minds of our students – the lessons must be taught, the respect must be paid, and the awareness must be passed to our youngest, most empathetic future leaders of our great nation.

To be able to share the history and immerse your students in the remembrance of a day of freedom, the specialists at the Bulk Bookstore have put together a list of three tried and true classics guaranteed to have your students immersed in the history and ready to work for a better tomorrow.

Lois Lowry’s Newberry Medal winning tale of the evacuation of the Jews from Nazi-held Denmark in the early 1940’s is one of the great untold stories of the war. This fictionalized version of a true account of courage and bravery is told through the eyes of a 10-year-old girl trying to make sense of the situation in which she is on a mission to save her best friend. Captivating, full of detail and facts, this 1990 classic is a must read for your Junior High classrooms.
