National Children’s Book Week

Posted by Michelle Dempsey, Book Specialist on Apr 13th 2016

The year was 1919. Pop-up toasters, rotary phones, and prohibition were all the rage. Our nation was working hard to build itself up again following the end of World War I. Everything was changing, improving, evolving, and growing. One thing remained the same, however.

Books.

In 1919, National Children’s Book Week was born. The mission was as simple as it was pure, yet almost 100 years later – the vision is the same. As Frederic Melcher, visionary editor of Publishers Weekly put it over 100 years ago, “A great nation is a reading nation.”

Our specialists at Bulk Bookstore have all let out a collective AMEN to that quote! Because it’s true. Reading is the foundation for all that is good in this world. From learning your ABC’s to studying for your SAT’s to researching a cure for XYZ – there isn’t much that can happen without out the good old knowledge and insight that a book provides.

That’s why, this brilliant week of literary celebrations should absolutely carry on, be celebrated in classrooms across the country, and continue garnering the excitement and love for reading that students only develop when engaged in enticing and engaging literary adventures. Flip open your plan books, mark off May 2nd-8th on your calendars, and get ready to wrap up this wonderful school year with yet another way to celebrate in the classroom.

Books for Children in Bulk

The Bulk Bookstore Specialists have come up with the top three ways to implement Children’s Book Week fun in the classroom. Check it out, have some fun, and get reading!

3. Meet My Author

Help your students pick their favorite children’s book author by having an authors showcase in the classroom. Students will have access to learning different styles adopted by each author, determine which resonates most with them, and prepare presentations to share with their peers and classmates. This may be the only case where we’d advocate for peer pressure.

2. Book Poster Contest

Everyone has their preferences, even the teeniest of minds, and when it comes to books, it’s okay to play favorites! Hold a classroom poster contest where students create their own designs to showcase their favorite books. Allow students to vote for their top picks and encourage one another’s work. Feel the love for reading grow as Children’s Book Week ramps up the energy in the classroom.

1. FIELD TRIP!

Because who doesn’t love a field trip? Arrange an excursion to your local library. Plan fun games, have students take turns choosing books to share with their peers, and of course, pack snacks. A little off-campus adventure coupled with learning and fun makes for the perfect way to celebrate Children’s Book Week.

As always, check out Bulk Bookstore for the BEST books to help bring your celebratory plans to life!

Be well, read well and don’t forget to keep this near-100 year old celebration alive.
