Overview
The USS Wasp (CV-7) played a significant role in World War II, showcasing the evolution and importance of carrier design in the modern era. Commissioned in April 1940, Wasp was involved in extensive training and experimental operations, and early missions included neutrality patrols in the Atlantic. More significant was her daring delivery of Spitfire fighters to Malta in 1942, which earned her praise from British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who famously remarked, “Who said a Wasp couldn't sting twice?”
The Wasp's most significant actions came in the Pacific theater during the Guadalcanal campaign. In August 1942, she launched airstrikes that devastated Japanese positions, enabling the first Allied landings in the Solomon Islands. Her pilots displayed exceptional skill, destroying enemy aircraft and ground targets with precision. These operations were critical in turning the tide of the war in the Pacific, as Guadalcanal became a crucial battleground for both sides. On September 15, 1942 the Wasp was struck by torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-19 while escorting reinforcements to the island. The explosions ignited massive fires, forcing the crew to abandon ship. Despite heroic rescue efforts, she sank later that evening, taking 193 lives with her.
The USS Wasp is a testament to aircraft carrier design and versatility, serving the Allies at a pivotal moment in WWII to contribute to their victory. This is the story of the ship and those who served and sacrificed in her service.
