In a world where we are constantly inundated with images of beautiful women, reality television shows about celebrities and their antics, and a notion that what you look like is more important than who you are as a person, it can be refreshing to come across a woman who has gained notoriety for none of the reasons I just listed. A woman, who as a young girl, found the challenges that came with living in a society that outlawed her ability to watch television, listen to music, and most importantly, to learn.
Despite all of this, though, she has fast become a hero, an inspiration, and role model for people across the world.
She is not your typical Hollywood celebrity. She is not gaining attention by flaunting her body, being photographed for tabloids, or allowing cameras into her personal life. She does not live her life to gain attention, rather, she gains attention for the way she lives her life .
She is Malala. And she is amazing, in every sense of the word.
For those of you who have not yet been introduced to this fierce and fearless woman, here are some fast facts about Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for female education and a believer in a better world:
She is not only the youngest Noble Peace laureate in the world, she is a survivor of an attack by a gunman who shot her three times, twice in the face. This came after she was singled out for her outspoken views about life under Taliban occupation, which she published as a blogger for BBC Urdu at the tender age of 12, where the local Taliban had banned females from attending school. The blog piece gained notoriety after being shared one year later by a New York Times journalist, who made a New York Times documentary about her life as the Pakistani military intervened in Malala’s home region of Mingora, Pakistan.
Using adversity and a near-death experience to drive her mission further, Malala continued on, fighting for the right to education for females in the Swat Valley in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Malala has become a worldwide hero for her commitment to the rights of women and young girls, her passion for education, her dedication to empowering others with her story, and most recently, her memoir, I Am Malala.
Not only is Malala’s personal story inspiring adults across the world, her story has resonated with young learners, too, proving our youth with a role model worth celebrating. In I Am Malala , students will be moved beyond words and inspired to no end by this powerful story that sheds light on a world so different from our own. Malala’s story includes exclusive photos and materials, and the personal tale of a hero who knew from a very young age that she would set out to change the world – and did.
