Overview
Divine Rivals meets What the River Knows in this gothic YA romance about a girl who is transported to 1895 Cuba and must solve a dark family mystery to return to her time.
The women in Camila Jiménez's family are cursed--at least, that's what her grandmother and mother tell her. But if you ask Camila, they just don't know how to let things go. Like the pain of when Camila's dad left, of when her grandmother fled Cuba, and now, the pain of losing her aunt Veronica. Tired of carrying her family's burdens, Camila takes it upon herself to clean out Veronica's junk-filled home. There, she discovers her aunt was investigating a centuries-old family mystery: In 1895, amidst the Cuban War of Independence, Camila's distant ancestor Luisa was kidnapped by family friend Hector Alvarez, and neither were ever seen again.
Until Camila touches a photo of Luisa and Hector, and she's suddenly seeing it being taken in real time--in nineteenth-century Cuba.
Camila sets out to solve the mystery of what happened to Luisa and Hector in hopes it will get her back to her time. But the deeper she digs, cracks start to form not only in their isolated countryside mansion, but in Luisa and Hector's story. And Camila soon realizes that some secrets demand to stay buried.
