Overview
In this semi-autobiographical YA graphic novel, a trans teen navigates Catholic school, confusing crushes, and coming out.
1997, New Jersey. Heather is on her way to a Halloween party, dressed like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. But after being taunted for being “a dude in girl's clothing” at the party, Heather vows to stop doing anything girly.
Instead, she tries to focus on her friendships: with Melanie, her best friend who wants to become more popular, with Paula, a cool, edgy girl in their class, and Jason, an older boy from the comic shop. It's hard to repress herself enough to stay in the closet, but things get even more confusing when Melanie wants to be more than friends, and when Heather starts developing crushes on Jason and Paula. As Heather experiments with letting people see who she really is and dips her toe into dating, she slowly finds the courage and community that she needs to be herself--no matter what other people might think.
