The twelve books of the
Apollo Photo Archive series comprise the most comprehensive pictorial record of America’s moon-landing program ever published. Each volume contains more than 750 photos and detailed captions illustrating all aspects of these historic flights. The series begins with this volume of more than 500 photos covering the fatal Apollo 1 tragedy and chronicles the next eleven missions including the first six lunar landings. From Apollo 7 through Apollo 17, each volume includes the arrival and assembly of the rocket and spacecraft, crew selection and training, pad rollout, preflight activities, countdown, launch, the flight itself, splashdown, and subsequent crew appearances and related activities. The first manned mission planned for the Apollo program also produced a first tragedy: no US astronaut had previously died aboard a spacecraft. The Apollo 1 command module caught fire on the launchpad, claiming the lives of all three astronauts on board.
