Al mismo tiempo, en Recópolis, ocupada por los musulmanes, el joven Ickila sueña con emigrar al norte y unirse a los cristianos en su lucha contra los sarracenos que dominan casi toda la península. Por eso, cuando tras una reyerta se enfrenta al destierro, decide buscar fortuna al otro lado de las montañas, donde el príncipe Alfonso acaudilla un ejército de astures, cántabros y godos empañados en resistir sin someterse ni pagar tributos.
