Bulk Books Inspire Students to Take a Stand Against Bullying

When the time rolled around for her children’s school’s annual guest reader event, mother of two Yvette L. decided to bring in There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom. To her surprise, the students responded better than expected to this anti-bullying book, and asked for more copies!

An Anti-Bullying Book for All

With so many books on bullying, Yvette wasn’t certain which one was right.

“I wanted to find a book that would resonate with all of the kids – those who are the bullies, and those who are picked on,” she explained.

She decided on Louis Sachar’s popular book There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, which follows the story of fictional fifth grade bully Bradley Chalkers. Carla, a new counselor at Bradley’s school, sees Bradley as a talented, artistic student – the true Bradley, rather than the front he puts on as Bradley the Bully.

"Even though the book is in third person, you learn the bully is mean because he doesn’t want you to hurt him in the long run,” Yvette explained.

She continues: “It would be the perfect lesson for these kids, especially since they’re graduating elementary school and moving up into middle. They may encounter some similar experiences, and this book would be great to have around.”

With this important message in mind, she settled on this title and bought a copy to read to the class, discussing the story with them at the end of the event.

What Yvette didn’t expect was how well these students would respond...

We Want More!

Once the story was over, an entirely new one began - the story of eager students finding a book that they love!

“They [the students] were asking all kinds of questions and wanted to know what happened at the end of the book,” Yvette said. “I only had the chance to read from a few chapters, not the entire story so I thought…what if I could find the book for cheaper and give it out to the kids as a takeaway?”

Luckily, Yvette found Bulk Bookstore and was able to supply her son's classmates with copies of There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom - one for each of them to take home.

Her son, she says, was "so proud to take the books in" and the students were so thrilled to each get a copy: "They're so thankful, they talk about it to this day!"

Introducing a book with an anti-bullying narrative to a classroom of any grade is sure to spark discussion among students, making way for opportunities to better understand and respect one another.

We’re thrilled that Yvette was able to find the quantity of books she needed for a great price with us, and hope that this inspiring anti-bullying streak continues.
