Famous Poets Talk About Poetry

Posted by Jamie M., Book Specialist on Mar 19th 2017

What better way to celebrate World Poetry Day than by sharing quotes by poets, about poetry?

Here are our top five favorites:

"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words."

- Robert Frost

Short, simple, and to the point. Robert Frost never disappoints.

"Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance."

- Carl Sandburg

Though Sandburg meant well in his choice of wording, I believe this descriptions borders more on absurd-ish.

"We make out of the quarrel with others, rhetoric, but of the quarrel with ourselves, poetry." '

- W. B. Yeats

Definitely one that makes me think deep thoughts, Yeats always knows what to say when I'm lost!

"Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash."

- Leonard Cohen

A beautiful, elegantly written explanation. The last line, by far, is my favorite summation.

"Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful."

- Rita Dove

Clearer, more concise words have ne'er been written. With writing this lovely, it's hard not to be smitten.
