Books have the magical ability to help us bond with others – and Karen is living proof. After reading “On the Night You Were Born” to her premature son while in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Karen felt overwhelmingly inspired. 

Read on to discover how one book sparked an entire organization, and how one woman is giving back to new mothers and families that need it the most.

A Rocky Start

In 2011, Karen found herself in the NICU of a Wisconsin hospital for 72 days, alongside her son who was born 13 week premature – a “preemie.” While in the hospital, Karen says a stranger donated On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman to all of the families in the NICU…an incredible blessing.

“It was such a touching gesture,” Karen told Bulk Bookstore. “I was able to bond with my tiny son by reading to him in the incubator.”

On the Night You Were Born is a beautiful book, available in both hardcover and board, that paints an enchanting picture of gratitude and joy as it uniquely describes ‘the night you were born,’ reminding each of us how loved we are.

PPOW! Packs a Pleasant Punch

After her incredible experience with On the Night You Were Born, Karen decided she wanted to do something to support others who go through the same situation she did. So, in 2016, she founded Preemie Power of Wisconsin, an organization whose goal is to support families that find themselves in a NICU in Wisconsin with a premature baby!

So, what does PPOW do? 

Karen told us, “We supply support packages on an ongoing basis to our local NICU – 200 over the course of a year to support all families with preemies born before 32 weeks. We also supply the packages to families in Wisconsin NICUs on a request basis.”
