The Truth About Positive Thinking: Five Techniques to Change Your Mindset

Posted by Jamie M., Book Specialist on Sep 1st 2017

Learning to think positively is a long-term effort, like going to the gym, and requires attention, repetition, and tons of self-love.

Here are some ways you can start making a positive change within yourself, today.

Many people struggle with thinking positively, and with good reason. Life can be stressful, and sometimes leaves you feeling defeated – but never fear! We've outlined a few tips that can help you work on developing a more positive mindset.

1. Become a ‘Realistic Optimist’

Is the glass half full, or half empty? Surprise – it can be both! Being a realistic optimist means training yourself to see both the good and bad sides of a given situation, but choosing to focus your time and energy on what will result in the most positive outcome. You don’t have to ignore the bad to see the good.

Here's an example: You miss the bus on the way to work. Instead of focusing your energy on the anger and frustration you feel, set your mind on a new plan of action – maybe you own a bike and opt to bike to work, or catch a ride and carpool with a coworker. The trick is to think ahead and let positively lead. You can complain to your coworkers about missing the bus later.

2. Set Daily Intentions

Intention is defined as ‘the thing that you plan to do or achieve; an aim or purpose’. Setting an intention for yourself helps to align your thoughts with what you truly desire.

Try setting an intention out loud to yourself in the mirror, in the morning. If you’re unhappy at your current job, picture what your dream job would look like and say, “I will have a new job” or “I will become this person” – or you can say something as simple as, “I will have a wonderful day today”.

Visualization is a powerful tool for positive thinking!

3. Forgiveness

A hard trick to master, but an incredibly powerful and important one, forgiveness is a big key to positive thought. Clinging to past feelings, holding grudges, or harboring negative emotions for others can easily keep someone from their own personal growth.

When we forgive even those who have caused us the most harm, we lighten our personal load and take the high road, which in turn moves us forward towards a more positive future. Know and accept that the past is in the past and be the Realistic Optimist that says, “I forgive you”.

4. Gratitude

So often in life, we complain about what we do not have. But, what about what we do have?

Take a moment each and every day to give thanks for everything you have, at every level. Recognize the good in your life, from your loved ones and pets to the roof over your head – if it makes you feel good, give thanks for it!

When you focus on the good aspects of your life, you attract more good things to you. Again, this tip helps you redirect your time and energy towards reshaping your mindset – to think positively.

5. Pay It Forward

Hold open the door for a stranger at the grocery store. Pay for the person behind you at the coffee shop. Compliment three people a day, or leave a big tip at a restaurant. Make someone’s day.

While thinking positively is something that can be practiced individually, it truly is contagious! Once you’ve gotten acquainted with a more positive mindset, go out and spread your happiness throughout your community.

Try putting one (or all) of these tips into action today. See where your positivity leads you!
