Overview
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
An unprecedented and intimate look at the artistic maturity of Luis Buñuel: The process of creating Belle de jour and his rebirth as a filmmaker.
“The best-known erotic film of modern times, perhaps the best.”
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
Fermín Solís revisits the international icon in this collaboration with the Luis Buñuel Film Institute.
A unique approach to the artistic maturity of Luis Buñuel and his rebirth as a filmmaker.
It was a creative process that crisscrossed between Madrid, Paris and Mexico City over five weeks in the mid 1960s. The result marked the second collaboration between Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière, at a time when half the film world dismissed the surrealist genius as washed up and the other half thought he was dead.
The pair immersed themselves in the script for Belle de jour, struggling to adapt the novel by the interwar novelist Joseph Kessel. The project seemed cursed, having defeated the efforts of successive directors, scriptwriters and producers. Buñuel suffered a profound creative and existential crisis, while Carrière risked his incipient film career and watched his marriage unravel.
Sometimes, the only way out of an impossible situation to team up with the unlikeliest of partners.
