In Cantabria, the term calabobos means a persistent, barely perceptible drizzle. In this novel, it rains constantly, and the characters are always soaking wet. Amid gorgeous but cruel landscapes and in a crude and fiery local dialect, the protagonist of this story describes the brutal silence of a forsaken town that seeps insidiously into its inhabitants. All the while, she searches desperately for her sister before the tide comes in.
It took a few years for Luis Mario to notice that he spent his whole life drenched. Now that he’s dry, he can write about the Bear Women, the Fish Man, women who suckle dogs, men who gut cows, and cows that fall into the sea. About Mariuca and Nanda La Chona, deadly herbal teas, oversexed barnacles, sparrows that sprout from the ground, pods lined with fangs, crones who eat babies, or a fetus in a mussel shell. But most of all, he writes about a place that never changes. Drizzle is a new type of mythological story, as stunning and treacherous as a rocky cliff.
