Overview
Eleven-year-old Tamiko Arima and her family have been travelling on a train for two days, on hard wooden benches, without food or water, for a destination unknown.
The year is 1946. As Japanese Canadians, the Arimas have been interned by the Canadian government for the past three years. But World War II has been over for a year now. Will this train finally take them home?
Little does Tamiko know they have no home to go back to.
Dumped in a former German prisoner of war camp deep in the northern Ontario wilderness, Tamiko tries to keep her hope for home alive as she, her parents, and her siblings Naomi, Kenji, and baby Kazu persist against harsh living conditions, starvation, sickness, and racism. In this historical fiction based on the real-life experiences of survivors of the Neys POW camp, now known as Neys Provincial Park, the Arima family prevail through grit, resourcefulness, resilience, and some help from unlikely allies.
