Overview
Founded in 1894, the Ebell of Los Angeles is one of the city’s oldest organizations with a mission to advance women’s education, cultural enrichment, and civic engagement.
Started in the parlor of a private home, the Ebell grew from a small gathering of women into a prominent cultural institution that shaped the civic landscape of Los Angeles. In 1927, the Ebell opened its iconic campus on Wilshire Boulevard, a magnificent Italian Renaissance Revival complex that includes the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. The Ebell became a vibrant center for arts, lectures, performances, and community events. Now, well into its second century, the Ebell stands as a testament to the power of women working together for the common good. At a time when women’s opportunities were limited, the Ebell welcomed women who wanted to make a difference—and it still does. The Ebell tells the story of women’s quest for community, equality, and meaningful civic participation, of women who came together, built something beautiful, and set out to change the world.
