Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Adventure, action and picaresque elements combine in this splendid historical novel set in seventeenth-century Seville.
“Echanove recreates 1600s Seville in all its detail in a classic adventure that recalls Oliver Twist.” -Félix J. Palma
El Lagartija is an orphan eking out a living in the district of Triana, where he teams up with El Manco, a slightly older friend, and a pair of twin brothers. Together, they roam the crowded streets, hunting for stray coins or a crust of bread, until fate causes them to split up.
From that moment on, El Lagartija must face the hardships of everyday life alone, alert to danger on every side. This is especially true when he meets Hendrick van Belle, a shady Flemish trader who dupes him into being his apprentice. Only by leaving his innocence behind and drawing on every ounce of his courage and intelligence can the boy survive in a world of violence, corruption and unbridled ambition.
Like other masters of the picaresque novel, Echanove uses a child’s perspective to show us the beauty and majesty of Seville, as well as its dark and predatory side.
