With hints of both a realistic and modernist style, along with some decadent tones, the novel tells the story of Felipe, a shy young man who decides that in order to study theology he must do so under a very rigorous discipline, one that ends up taking a toll on his health. When he returns to his uncle’s house to begin the healing process, he reunites with a childhood friend, Asuncion, who will make him question his commitment to religious life. In El domador de almas / The Soul Tamer readers will be surprised at a radical turn within Nervo’s narrative style which, this time offers a storyline closer to science fiction —perhaps the first of its kind in Latin American literature — than the realistic storylines that he was known for at the beginning of his career.
