Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

In the style of Lagioia’s City of the Living, Strega Prize finalist Alessandra Carati examines a case that obsessed an entire country and continues to stir debate.

At 2:00 p.m. on January 8, 2007, Rosa Bazzi and Olindo Romano leave the town of Erba in Lombardy in a police car. They think the carabinieri are protecting them from the reporters camped outside their home, but in less than an hour the couple find themselves in prison in Bassone. The media waste no time in dubbing them “the monsters of Erba,” accused of murdering four of their neighbors – three of them members of a single family, including a two-year-old. Bazzi and Romano face a life sentence and, even worse in their eyes, separation.

Unable to let go of a case that remains one of Italy’s most notorious crimes, Strega Prize finalist Alessandra Carati arranges to meet Bazzi in 2019 and visits her in jail every week from July to February of the next year. “Now I can vent to you like I do to the chaplain,” the accused murderess tells her. Even as she delves into Rosy’s psyche and her contradictory, disconnected and not very believable account of events, Carati discovers glaring gaps and irregularities in the legal investigation. Intrigued, she collects the stories and perspectives of those involved closely in the case – Bazzi’s husband, psychologist, attorneys, chaplain – to reveal the many faces of Rosy. As La Lettura observes, “Carati has learned from Carrère. […] Powerful and unsettling, The Rosy Case is a novel about the meaning of existence.”
