La región rural de Auvernia, Francia, ha sufrido tres pérdidas inimaginables: con implacable regularidad, el día 20 de los últimos tres meses ha fallecido, en misteriosas circunstancias, un librero. Adrien Darcy, un periodista deportivo en horas bajas que lo ignora todo sobre el mundo de los libros, recibe el encargo de investigar el posible vínculo entre estas tres muertes. Para ello decide unir fuerzas con Emma Pélissier, fundadora del Círculo y una apasionada lectora. Conforme aumenta la tensión por el caso y entre Adrien y Emma surge algo más que una amistad, esta inesperada pareja considerará a una serie de peculiares sospechosos: un profesor que defiende fervientemente la venta en línea, un librero rencoroso al que se le negó la admisión al club y un escritor fracasado que aún no ha superado su breve relación con Emma, en una frenética carrera por impedir más crímenes y salvar a los libreros, y con ellos a sus librerías, de la desaparición.

The rural region of Auvergne, France, has suffered three unimaginable losses: with relentless regularity, on the 20th of each of the last three months, a bookseller has died under mysterious circumstances. Not only that: all of them belonged to the Circle of the Last Booksellers, an association created to fight for the survival of small bookstores in a society determined to see them go extinct.
Adrien Darcy, a struggling sports journalist who knows nothing about the world of books, is tasked with investigating the possible link between these three deaths. To do so, he decides to join forces with Emma Pélissier, founder of the Circle and a passionate reader. As the tension surrounding the case mounts and something more than friendship blossoms between Adrien and Emma, this unlikely pair will consider a series of peculiar suspects—a professor who fervently advocates for online sales, a resentful bookseller who was denied admission to the club, and a failed writer who still hasn’t gotten over his brief relationship with Emma—in a frantic race to prevent further crimes and save the booksellers, and with them their bookstores, from disappearing.
