Overview

-Ana Clavel, El Universal.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Two stories unfold in parallel: that of the naturalist Charles Darwin and that of a contemporary blogger who calls himself “the last Darwinist.”

By acclaimed novelist Rosa Beltrán, author of Loves That Kill.

Only at the end of a life can you truly know how — and to what — you have adapted.

This work intertwines two narratives. On one hand, it tells the fascinating life of Charles Darwin, a sickly genius who, in his time, was dismissed as a fraud, a blasphemer, an ignoramus, and many other things for daring to argue that every species, including humans, descends from another and forms part of a process called evolution.

On the other hand, it follows the strange path of one of our contemporaries, who considers himself “the last Darwinist” and opens a blog where he showcases human beings who, according to him, are mutations of our species—produced by the chemical additives that have been in our food for decades and by unforeseen derivations of “technological progress.” He also compiles cases that contradict supposed truths such as the instinct to protect one’s young, filial love, and above all, the social usefulness and moral validity of what we call “doing good.”

Thus, Darwin’s vicissitudes—his voyage aboard the famous ship Beagle, the publication of On the Origin of Species, and the consequences of his boldness—play out in parallel to the complications faced by our last Darwinist: mass complaints on his blog, accusations of pornography and pedophilia, the hacking of his site, and ultimately, the pursuit of authorities who deem him outside the law.

What the critics have said:

“A stimulating and necessary read that takes us into territories rarely explored in contemporary fiction.” —Ana Rodríguez Fischer, *Babelia*, El País.

“The narrative is carried with superb irony, without slipping into vulgarity or cheap humor (the documentation on all topics is excellent), and it sustains a remarkably original angle throughout.” —Alejandro Gándara, El Mundo.

“With The Exposed Body, Rosa Beltrán writes a delirious and concentrated contemporary Human Comedy. Faced with the contradictions and perversities of human behavior—unique among species for its capacity for destruction and self-devouring—how can we not recall Pascal’s famous aphorism: ‘the heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of’?” —Ana Clavel, El Universal.
