A lo largo de los años hemos visto como las políticas intervencionistas han conducido a sus países a la pobreza, a la inflación desbocada, a la corrupción –incluso en figuras como el expresidente brasileño Lula da Silva–, a los recortes de derechos y libertades y, en definitiva, a la destrucción de las posibilidades de progreso. Para entender este fenómeno tan arraigado en Hispanoamérica, los autores analizan la anatomía de la mentalidad populista, su desprecio por la libertad individual y la correspondiente idolatría por el Estado que los emparenta con totalitarismos del pasado, así como el odio hacia el neoliberalismo o su obsesión igualitarista, entre otros aspectos. Otro factor fundamental de la tradición populista, que se estudia en este libro, es la hegemonía cultural, el rol de los intelectuales y el uso del lenguaje en la creación de opinión a través de los medios de comunicación. Podemos, en este sentido, apenas ha adaptado al mercado español las formas y usos de una estrategia ya validada en otros territorios. A pesar de este panorama tan desalentador, los autores sostienen que hay esperanza. Una alternativa política que pasa por construir un nuevo republicanismo liberal a partir de la recuperación de las instituciones, la educación y el uso de las nuevas tecnologías.
