Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Western novel about the frontier wars between the United States and Mexico, when territories were lost and Apache, Mexicans, and Americans clashed.

This polyphonic novel tells the story of Henry Lloyd, a mysterious character that, slowly but surely, builds an empire in the mid eighteen hundreds. Bold, sharp, and smart, the only person he fears is his nemesis, Jack Barley, the only one who could bring down his empire. Jack Barley is an eleven-year-old kid who kills a boy in self-defense, and then kills his family, so has to skip town before the authorities capture him and put his head in a noose. Henry Lloyd’s and Jack Barley’s stories run parallel until their inevitable faceoff.

The Man narrates the close-ups of other characters that accompany Henry. James, a boy kidnapped from his village in Africa to be taken as a slave to the United States, where, over time, will become one of Lloyd’s most-trusted men. Jeremiah, a giant black man who refuses to speak the tongue of the enslavers, so white men think him mute and dumb. Virginia, heiress to a vast plantation in Alabama, who marries Lloyd, but for painful reasons must be parted from him. Rodrigo, a young Mexican who lives in a Texas ranch and sees how the frontier dividing Mexico from the States threatens to blur.

The novel follows the course of Henry Lloyd’s immense fortune, to his current descendants, who will uncover, piece by piece, the dark past of their ancestors. The novel explores the origins of American capitalism; the shaping of the United States throughout the nineteenth century; the terrible battles between the Apache, Mexicans, and Texans; the deep wound of slavery, and the political vicissitudes derived from the tumultuous historical development of the past 180 years, all revolving around the colossal figure of Henry Lloyd.
