In the harsh December of 1905, Enrique Maldonado, a landowner and local political leader in the Salamanca municipality of Boada, is found brutally murdered on the outskirts of town. With the locals the main suspects in the killing, Unamuno, author of an indignant article denouncing the living conditions of area peasants, decides to investigate the crime with the help of defense attorney Manuel Rivera and the mysterious anarchist Teresa Maragall.
The bodies begin to pile up, and Unamuno’s reputation as a renowned intellectual and controversial rector of the University of Salamanca is split between admirers and detractors. As his headstrong character bumps up against power and its associated evils, Unamuno encounters obstacles to the investigation that put more lives at risk, including his own.
