The stories in In Private Language challenge their own fictional nature by venturing into statements and strategies that seem to belong to the essay and the chronicle. Although these texts seem to play at disguising themselves in the garb of other genres, they do not deny what they are, for each one ultimately reveals, through dialogues and arcs of dramatic tension, the intimate secrets of writing and of the moments that make a life unique. Here, the creativity of memory and of oblivion is revealed, along with the reasons for tracing our own experience in poetry, the multifaceted nature of the voices that inhabit us and those we encounter, and the unsettling presence of the double.
This book is, in turn, a reading journal where the words of Sada, Montalbetti, Kristof, Moore, Coetzee, or Di Benedetto infuse with meaning the moments when the “disease of language” produces its most excruciating symptoms. In the background, Emiliano Monge—author and character—revisits his past (or perhaps his future?) in these pages.
