In December 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set sail on the Endurance toward the South Pole, with the goal of crossing Antarctica, the last unexplored continent, by land. Shackleton and his men survived adrift in one of the most inhospitable regions of the world before abandoning the ship and embarking on a journey of more than 2,000 kilometers to reach the nearest outpost of civilization.
