In 2017, Ken and Kathy Privratsky commemorated their seventieth birthdays with an unusual celebration: by donning backpacks and walking a legendary pilgrimage route from Saint Jean Pied de Port, France over the Pyrenees, across the historically diverse regions of northern Spain to the sacred city of Santiago, and then onward to the Atlantic Ocean, where they spread ashes of loved ones onto the sea. Their walk from France to the Atlantic Ocean spanned seven weeks and took them across regions of northern Spain rich with legends and history. The journey took them through countless small villages and some large cities, on small country paths and beside busy highways on occasion. Along the way, they made many friendships that will remain for years to come. Ken and Kathy did not undertake this adventure on a whim. Rather, they planned and trained well in advance. Their commitment to each other over nearly 600 miles was simply to take every step together. Before leaving the United States, they established a closed Facebook page called Privratskys on the Camino. About two hundred friends, friends of friends and family woke up in mornings anticipating posts about their journey across Spain. That interest became inspiration for Every Step Together on the Camino de Santiago.
