Overview
Since its publication in 1953, Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 has become a novel of international acclaim, remaining a poignant, relevant read for generations.
“A book is a loaded gun in the house next door…Who knows who might be the target of the well-read man?”
Set in an unspecified future, books have been outlawed - “firemen” are tasked with burning not just books, but the houses they are found within. Guy Montag, one of these firemen, believes he is simply doing his duty…until he meets Clarisse, a young neighbor, who turns his worldview upside down. As Montag begins to question his line of work and ultimately his sense of self, his highly censored, desensitized society becomes more dystopian by the minute.
Originally a commentary paralleling McCarthyism, Bradbury’s sentiments can be seen as pertinent to the past as well as the present. Fahrenheit 451 highlights not just the dangers of lacking knowledge on an individual level, but the devastating results of cultural conformity and though control on a societal one.
