Candela has long been resigned to failing to win the love of her father, Bernardo Salazar, the man she most admires and would most love to hate. All she dreams of now is marrying a man of her own choosing, finally fulfilling her need for affection and enjoying a content and peaceful life in Terrosa.
Her plans are thwarted when her father returns unexpectedly from his travels in England to introduce her to the man to whom he has promised her in marriage. Lord William Caldecourt, tenth Earl of Waldwick, arrives in Terrosa determined to make trouble and settle an old score. At least, that’s what he tells everyone, having promised his mother to reclaim the memory of his family, which Bernardo Salazar destroyed.
To his dismay, however, ever since seeing Candela’s face in a daguerreotype, he suspects that the woman he considered a pawn in his plans for revenge could be the one person to free him from the dark designs of fate.
