Overview
Readers interested in towns that formed the backbone of America along with some famous historical names will delight in Greenville. In what is now Greenville, Ohio, Fort Greene Ville was erected in 1793 by American Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne. The Treaty of Greenville was signed in 1795, and relative peace and safety encouraged people to begin to move west. The swampy soil and forests yielded a major agricultural economy. The city of Greenville, Ohio, was surveyed and plotted in 1808 and named the county seat. With growth came a few well-known names, such as Annie Oakley, Lowell Thomas, and Henry St. Clair, all having connections to the area. The company that created the KitchenAid mixer was established in the area, and Whirlpool, Corningware, and Nestle all contributed to the growth and vibrancy of the community that remain to this day. This pictorial book provides a glimpse of the city during the 19th and 20th centuries and the role it has played in local and national history. Both current and former residents as well as visitors will find it interesting and full of memories.
