Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

In Like Father... we find a Juan Nepomuceno Almonte taking stock of his life with nostalgic gaze—stock of what he believes of himself, of what other people think, of the real events. The result, a vivid, human, and endearing portrait where the character sheds all labels of patriot or traitor, and transcends them.

Paris, 1867. Juan Nepomuceno Almonte, son of José María Morelos y Pavón, arrives in France to ask Napoleon III for help, with the intention of supporting Maximilian’s rule. However, he is unsuccessful. A few months after the emperor’s execution, a clandestine group of Mexican and French people, looking to establish a Third Mexican Empire, contact Almonte to endorse their ambitions. The liaison between them is a young famous writer, with whom Almonte shares the great episodes of his past—what it has meant being the son of the so-called Servant of the Nation, his involvement in a few battles during the war for independence when he was just a boy, his later stay in New Orleans, the landmarks of his military and political career, as well as his relationship with Santa Anna, Juárez, Maximilian, Charlotte...
