Overview
"Someone here is getting their last call."
An eighty-year-old evangelist stopped the altar call in a Nazarene church in Ashland, Kentucky, to say those words. A sixteen-year-old girl laughed. The next afternoon, walking home from school, she was killed by a speeding car.
R. T. Kendall, who would later lead Westminster Chapel in London for twenty-five years, was fifteen and sitting in that service. It left him with a sense of the fear of God he has carried ever since.
Today, he says, that fear has nearly vanished from the church, Charismatic and Evangelical alike.
Not because anyone voted it out. Pulpits simply learned not to offend. Prophets say "Thus says the Lord," get it wrong, and never apologize. Leaders fall, and congregations shrug. Hell has disappeared from the pulpit. Churches grow by collecting believers from other churches. And when Kendall asks a room of churchgoers, "If God asked you, 'Why should I let you into My heaven?', what would you say?", too many answer, "I have done my best." "I speak in tongues." "I have been faithful."
Holy Fear is his answer. Not a call to terror, but to the moment God's opinion becomes heavier than anyone else's. That fear, Kendall writes, is either caught, when the Spirit falls as at Pentecost, or taught, through Scripture.
Inside:
▪ Why Kendall publicly called the Lakeland "revival" "not of God" while a dozen leaders laid hands on its evangelist, two weeks before it collapsed
▪ What grieves the Holy Spirit, and why it is "the easiest thing in the world to do"
▪ Why Jesus' words about hell, "where their worm does not die," still stand against the claim that the lost simply cease to exist
▪ Why your hardest season may be God's discipline, and why that is good news: "God got even at the cross"
▪ Why the time you spend alone in prayer is "a pretty good indication of how much you fear God"
▪ Why gratitude and the fear of the Lord are, in Kendall's words, "twins"
Charisma House has published some thirty of Kendall's books. In his own words, "never one like this."
It is not a question of whether you will ever fear God. It is only a question of when.
