Overview
Experience the intensely colorful work of British artist Hurvin Anderson with this exquisite monogrph, published to accompany his major exhibition at Tate Britain.
Bringing together work from across Anderson’s career, from his student years to new paintings, Hurvin Anderson explores the distinctive vision of one of the most important contemporary British painters of his generation. Anderson’s atmospheric, color-drenched landscapes and interiors move between Britain and the Caribbean, reflecting on memory, migration, identity, belonging, and his British and Caribbean heritage.
Born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, Anderson draws upon family history, experiences from his youth, and places of personal and cultural significance. Parks, beaches, family members, and barbershops recur throughout his work, while locations thousands of miles apart can seem to merge within a single composition. By repeatedly revisiting and reworking these subjects, Anderson explores the unreliability of memory, the complexities of cultural heritage, and what it means to belong to more than one place.
Combining figuration and abstraction, Anderson brings these deeply personal subjects into dialogue with a sustained engagement with the traditions of British landscape painting. His paintings range from intimate, snapshot-like images to monumental landscapes, united by his remarkable handling of color, space, light, and the material qualities of paint.
Published in conjunction with Anderson’s major Tate Britain exhibition, this richly illustrated monograph offers an expansive view of his artistic practice. Edited by Dominique Heyse-Moore, Senior Curator of Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain, it features contributions by Eddie Chambers, Jasmine Kaur Chohan, Gillian Forrester, Roshini Kempadoo, Glenn Ligon, and Kobena Mercer.
