Overview

A soaring history of the national pastime, uncovering the story of Black baseball from before the Negro Leagues through integration, in rich, unforgettable portraits of the players, managers, fans, and teams who changed the game forever.

On April 8, 1974, in the fourth inning, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hit his first home run of the season. It was the 715th in his career and with it he broke Babe Ruth's long-held world record. In the months before and after, Aaron received death threats, hate mail, and intense and unrelenting media scrutiny. Audiences were shocked: a Black player had beaten the Babe.

In I Just Want Them to Remember Me, Rowan Ricardo Phillips takes Aaron’s famous words as both a point of departure and a guiding challenge. The result is a sweeping history of Black baseball and a revelatory new account of American baseball itself.

Beginning in the free Black communities of the nineteenth century and moving through the rise of the Negro Leagues, the integration of Major League Baseball, and the transformations that followed, Phillips reconstructs a world too often fragmented, overlooked, or reduced to a handful of familiar names. Here are pioneering clubs and visionary executives, crusading journalists and local heroes, legendary stars and forgotten trailblazers. Here are the communities that built Black baseball, the institutions that sustained it, and the generations of players whose brilliance and talent flourished despite their exclusion from organized white baseball.

Moving between panoramic history and vivid portraits of individual lives, Phillips tells the stories of the Weeksville Unknowns, Octavius Catto, the Cuban Giants, Bud Fowler, Rube Foster, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson, and countless others whose achievements survive in box scores, photographs, letters, newspapers, oral histories, and scattered archival traces. Together, their stories reveal Black baseball not as a parallel history to the national pastime but as its essential foundation—a tradition that helped shape the game’s institutions, culture, style, ambitions, and enduring meaning.

Drawing on years of archival research and written with narrative power, intellectual depth, and literary grace, I Just Want Them to Remember Me recovers forgotten lives, reexamines celebrated ones, and restores Black baseball to its rightful place at the center of the American story. At once a monumental work of history and a sweeping narrative of ambition, ingenuity, community, and achievement, this singular book illuminates a tradition whose influence extends far beyond the diamond. It stands as an ode to the talent and determination that shaped both the game and the nation. The most comprehensive single-volume history of Black baseball ever written—and a landmark work of sports history—I Just Want Them to Remember Me reveals that the history of Black baseball is the history of the nation itself.
