Overview
“The clouds of hunger cover the sky. The earth withers. No food for the mouths of men.”
Words spoken long ago by the Umar Empire’s founder are nearing reality. As the people’s overreliance on ohaleh—the miracle rice impervious to pests—grows deeper, fifteen-year old Aisha is desperate to avert the famine she knows is looming. One that only she, gifted with the original ability of the Kokun to read the voices of plants through their scents, can stop.
The granddaughter of the deposed king of West Kantal, Aisha has successfully hidden herself and her gift within the ranks of the Koshi, an order sworn to regulate the crops throughout the empire—especially that of the ohaleh. But when one imperial territory makes a decision that is seemingly the “salvation” of the empire, the wind shifts, bringing with it a disaster no one could have foreseen.
As Aisha and Olie, the young woman revered as the reincarnated Kokun (but without any true ability) tread deeper, they discover the voracious threat is deeply intertwined with the ecosystem, as well as with the politics and economics of the empire. Standing on the cusp of disaster, their fates begin to shift dramatically.
