Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The Cuban Revolution was on the verge of dying before it was even born.
It happened in Mexico.

On June 20, 1956, on a street corner in Mexico City, the fate of Latin America hung by a thread while Captain Fausto Morales Juárez aimed a .45 caliber pistol at the back of Fidel Castro’s neck.

But he did not fire.

Along with other young Cubans—who would later become the crew of the Granma—Castro was arrested by the Federal Security Directorate… which, ironically, saved his life.

In this work, with the journalistic rigor that characterizes him, José Reveles not only unravels that episode—which for decades remained under strict state secrecy—but also reconstructs a high-stakes web of espionage and treason that led to the arrest of Che Guevara in Chalco; he documents the discipline of the safe houses in Polanco and Narvarte, and the grueling training in the city’s hills.

Drawing on the testimony of the protagonist who captured the revolutionary leaders and on declassified documents, the author reveals how those actions by the Mexican intelligence system shaped the future of Latin America.
