Overview
In a vibrant new translation, Ilan Stavans introduces de Rojas’s fifteenth century classic to a new generation of readers and includes a novelistic reimagining that highlights the original’s humor, erotic obsession, social precarity, and philosophical instability.
“If Cervantes had never been born, La Celestina would be the greatest imaginative work produced in Spain,” according to eminent Spanish critic Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo. It is also one of the earliest precursors we have of a Jewish novel. La Celestina tells the story of a feisty bawd whose manipulations lead two lovers to their fateful death. Along the way, readers get extraordinary insight into the private, domestic life of characters who belong to various social classes in Spain at the end of the fifteenth century.
This hybrid literary project includes a contemporary translation, a novelized adaptation, and an introductory essay that situates the work historically, philosophically, and culturally, making it accessible and compelling for modern audiences unfamiliar with early modern Spanish literature. Unlike many academic translations that flatten literary texture, Stavans’s version maintains the wit and theatricality of the original, understanding La Celestina as a work of language and performance.
