Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
In the poems of José Emilio Pacheco, Octavio Paz wrote, the triumph of nature over culture is exalted—and in exalting it, he transfigures it, turning it into word.
The anguish that comes with nightfall feeds on a primal fear, but then the miracle happens: dawn arrives and “cancels our despair, absolves us of our madness, proves that the world did not dissolve into darkness.” It is then that “dawn gives us the first hour and the first now of another life. The only thing that truly belongs to us is the day that begins.”
Published in 2009, in The Age of Darkness, José Emilio Pacheco brings to a close an extraordinary poetic journey that began fifty years earlier with The Elements of Night, doing so by revitalizing a fertile tradition in twentieth-century Mexican literature: the prose poem.
