Entre 1908 y 1910, Valle-Inclán se propuso abordar narrativamente el asunto épico por excelencia: la guerra, ofreciendo un cuadro tan amplio como complejo del desarrollo de la tercera y última de las guerras carlistas, en el que quería hacer resonar la voz «de todo un pueblo». Pese a la audacia y los logros de su empeño, Valle desistió de prolongarlo, insatisfecho con su desarrollo.
Pasaríanmás de quince años hasta que viera la luz, en 1926, su siguiente novela, Tirano Banderas, con la que el escritor alcanza una de las cimas de su arte prodigioso, que lo es también de toda la narrativa del siglo XX, en la que inaugura un fecundo linaje: la «novela de dictador».

The second volume featuring the novels of one of the most prominent authors of contemporary Spain: Ramón María del Valle-Inclán.
Between 1908 and 1910, Valle-Inclán set out to narratively tackle the quintessential epic theme: war, offering a depiction as broad as it was complex of the unfolding of the third and final Carlist War, in which he sought to make 'the voice of an entire people' resonate. Despite the boldness and the achievements of his effort, Valle abandoned the project, dissatisfied with its development.
More than fifteen years would pass before his next novel, Tirano Banderas, saw the light of day in 1926-a work in which the writer reached one of the pinnacles of his prodigious art, and, indeed, of twentieth-century fiction as a whole. With it, he inaugurated a rich literary tradition: the 'dictator novel.
