Children who lose their parents are orphans, and those who have to close their spouse's dead eyes are widows and widowers. But we, the parents who sign the documents authorizing our children's funerals, we have no name, no civil status. We remain parents forever; the parents of a ghost who will never age, will never again need a ride to school, who won’t meet a girl, go to college or move away from home. A child who will never again get in trouble or need to be scolded. A child who will never read the books we dedicate to them. With no term to describe us, we are doomed to live forever in a violet hour. Our clocks haven’t stopped, but instead chime the same hour over and over again. This is the state I try to invoke here, recalling that year of my life to enshrine it in memory and ensure I never take it for granted.”
