Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Latin America experienced the Cold War very intensely politically, but also culturally. The Cuban Revolution played a key role in that conflict, largely because it was a political movement that in the span of a decade touched upon almost all aspects of the left within that region. The Literary Polis narrates those developments and gives a voice to intellectuals of that era.

Ideological arguments of the Cold War reaffirmed a great cultural concept of national identity and Latin Americanism; at this time, the new novel was subjected to critical analyses by many different ideologies. It is within this context that the so-called boom of the new Latin American novel came to the forefront.

A generation of writers born in the twenties and thirties, such as Julio Cortazar, Augusto Roa Bastos, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carlos Fuentes, Jose Donoso or Guillermo Cabrera Infante, began publishing stories and novels in the years prior the Cuban Revolution in January 1959. Literature, particularly novels, which those writers aspired to create, were very much part of the ideological conflict of the Cold War.

With a new look at the Latin American Boom, Rafael Rojas shares the intellectual and social struggles of that literature which transformed and gave a new twist to Latin American.
