Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The most widely disseminated and famous work of Ortega y Gasset.

José Ortega y Gasset (Madrid, 1883–1955), PhD in Philosophy and Letters, pursued further studies at the Universities of Leipzig, Berlin, and Marburg, and at twenty-seven secured the chair of Metaphysics at the Central University. In 1923 he founded Revista de Occidente, one of the cultural journals of greatest international prestige.

The Revolt of the Masses, first published in 1930, is Ortega's most widely disseminated and famous work. As Julián Marías explains in his Introduction, the book appears truer and more faithful to reality as time passes. The reason for its renewed relevance confirms the philosophical character of the work as opposed to the political meaning that is often mistakenly attributed to it.

“I think that every life —says Ortega— ... is composed of pure instants, each of which is relatively indeterminate with respect to the previous one, so that in it reality hesitates..., and does not know well whether to decide for one or another among several possibilities. This metaphysical hesitation gives to all that is vital that unmistakable quality of vibration and trembling”
