Despite her feelings of intellectual and physical inferiority, Antonia has occasional glimpses of hope, through literature or, rarely, the companionship of others who are equally broken. The one true constant of her reality, however, is her mother’s alternating indifference and rejection. This, and an atmosphere polluted by power, corruption, addiction, and the illnesses already taking root in her young body.
