Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
“In that seaside environment. At the edge of the cliff. Where words still want to express and not overpower, as beings of a wild nature, where life trembles with fear, amazement, or laughter. This is where I’m writing.”
The Hidden Land collects the works of Manuel Rivas that have in common a natural literary condition, being a manuscript of soil, understood as a real and symbolic space of emergency, abandonment, crisis, and a battle against extinction.
This volume includes Rivas’ essential works (One Million Cows, recipient of the Spanish Critics Award; The Potato Eaters, and In Wild Company, recipient of the Galician Critics Award) in a new edition, revised by the author. It also contains an anthology of short stories entitled The Inhabitants of Difficulty. All which suggest a look into the rural universe away from regionalism, and can be read as a metaphor for the world we live in. This is a literature in which everything has a voice, human and non-human, and in which imagination is key to walk into the shaded area of reality.
The narrative in The Hidden Land is anticipatory, upwind, with a stamp of humor and irony that portrays injustice or communicates helplessness. A “path of fireflies” trying to unveil what is frowned upon. Because it is unknown or because it disturbs. A work of de-extinction.
