The two are childhood friends, but Nellie is not in love with him, and she promises to free him from the marriage once he is able to realize his true vocation as a musician. That moment comes at the conclusion of World War I, and Phipps disappears from Nellie’s life. She and her colleague, Maria, struggle to establish a veterinary practice in Berlin, but the past and love soon catch up with them....
